Wedding Photography Beginner?

HOW EXCITING!! You’re wanting to get into Wedding photography! First let me start out by saying I LOVE it! As someone who is slowly transitioning to being just a wedding photographer, here are my tips and tricks that have helped me and also have been pointed out by past and future clients!

Starting out as a wedding photographer can be both exciting and challenging. Here are some essential tips for a beginner wedding photographer:

  1. Build a Diverse Portfolio:

    • Create a portfolio that showcases a variety of your work. Include different lighting conditions, and types of shots to demonstrate your versatility.

  2. Assist or Second Shoot:

    • Gain experience by assisting or second shooting for an experienced wedding photographer. This hands-on experience will help you understand the dynamics of a wedding day and build confidence.

  3. Invest in Quality Equipment:

    • Now this doesn’t mean you have to have the best of the best! I shot my first wedding with a kit lens! You still want to make sure your gear is reliable and high-quality. Have backup cameras, lenses, memory cards, and batteries to ensure you're prepared for any situation.

  4. Understand Your Gear:

    • Please please PLEASE shoot in Manual! If you don’t know how, there are a lot of videos on YouTube to teach you how (I will link one at the bottom of this blog!). Take the time to thoroughly understand your camera settings and equipment. Being familiar with your gear will allow you to focus on capturing moments without struggling with technical issues.

  5. Scout Locations in Advance:

    • Visit the wedding venue(s) before the big day to familiarize yourself with the locations, lighting conditions, and potential photo opportunities. This will help you plan your shots and anticipate challenges.

  6. Communicate with the Couple:

    • Establish open communication with the couple well before the wedding day. Understand their expectations, preferences, and any specific shots they want. Building rapport helps create a comfortable and collaborative atmosphere. Make sure you ask all the questions, you’re not annoying I promise, they will appreciate it in the end!

  7. Create a Shot List:

    • I always get the couple to write up a shot list for their family, but make your own for Bridal Portraits, Girls/Guys getting ready, etc. Develop a shot list in collaboration with the couple. While spontaneous moments are essential, having a list ensures you capture important details and group shots that are significant to the couple.

  8. Master Low-Light Photography:

    • THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!! You’re going to get all kinds of lighting working a 6+ hour wedding! Wedding venues often have varying lighting conditions. Practice and master low-light photography techniques, including using external flash and understanding different lighting sources.

  9. Capture Candid Moments:

    • Always watch out for those smiles! Candid moments are often the most cherished. Keep an eye out for genuine emotions, interactions, and spontaneous moments throughout the day.

  10. Be Unobtrusive and Respectful:

    • Now, every shot is important for sure, but blend into the background as much as possible (this is a huge reason of why I wear all black), especially during intimate moments. Respect the couple's space and the sanctity of the ceremony.

  11. Prepare for the Unpredictable:

    • Weddings are unpredictable, and things may not go as planned. Be adaptable, stay calm under pressure, and always have a backup plan.

  12. Post-Processing Skills:

    • Develop post-processing skills to enhance and edit your images. Consistency in editing style contributes to a polished and professional-looking portfolio.

  13. Continuous Learning:

    • Stay updated on photography trends, techniques, and equipment. Attend workshops, online courses, and engage with the photography community to continue learning and improving your skills.

  14. Insurance and Contracts:

    • LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST - I don't care who you are shooting, it could be the King of England, PROTECT YOURSELF!! Protect yourself and your business by having appropriate insurance coverage. Additionally, use clear and comprehensive contracts to outline the terms of your services and avoid misunderstandings - and do NOT change anything in your contract!

Remember, building a successful wedding photography business takes time and dedication. Continuously strive to improve your skills, provide exceptional service, and create memorable experiences for your clients.
